My $100 Skincare Capsule

Ok... just about $100 😉

Skincare is my thing. But I’m also a working mom, which means the products I prioritize need to be both quick and effective. And let’s be real: childcare, diapers, and a toddler who insists on trying every snack under the sun usually win out over fancy serums.

With prices creeping up (thanks, tariffs and inflation 🙃), I’ve had to get really intentional about where my beauty budget goes. So here’s the deal: if I only had $100 to spend, what would make the cut? These are the five products I’d buy on repeat — the ones that keep my routine streamlined and affordable so when I do splurge on a new serum, I don’t feel guilty. It’s all about balance!

My 5 Under $100 Lineup:

1. Cleanser — $14

Normally I double cleanse (oil first, then water-based), but if I had to pick just one, this is it. It’s gentle, non-stripping, and keeps my skin balanced, even when I’m half-asleep and racing through my routine.

2. Vitamin C Serum — $15–25

For the AM: my brightening step and daily dose of glow. Vitamin C evens tone, boosts radiance, and helps protect skin from daily stress.

  • Goodal Vita-C Dark Spot Serum — lightweight, hydrating, and gentle enough for sensitive mornings. It feels luxe without the price-tag shock and gives that glass-skin brightness.

3. SPF — $14–27

The non-negotiable step. No product does more for your skin (or your future self) than sunscreen. And these two multitask as moisturizer and SPF, which helps keep the capsule tight.

  • Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun — light, silky, zero white cast. It hydrates like a moisturizer but offers full SPF protection to prevent premature aging and dark spots. My everyday go-to.

  • COSRX Vitamin E SPF — a little more nourishing, with antioxidants for extra protection. Vitamin E actually boosts the effects of Vitamin C, so layering this after an AM Vitamin C serum makes the combo even more protective against UV and pollution (win-win!)

4. Retinol — $22–27

For PM, I slot in retinol — the gold standard for smoother, clearer, more even skin. Retinoids increase cell turnover, fade spots, and boost collagen.

  • COSRX Retinol Oil — gentle but glowy, perfect if your skin’s new to retinol or needs more moisture.

  • KSECRET SEOUL 1988 — stronger, with retinal (a next-gen retinoid) and black ginseng for smoother texture and fine lines. Amazing ingredients at an even amazing-er price.

5. Night Cream / Mask — $27

My favorite lazy-night product. It doubles as a night cream or sleeping mask, so I can slap it on and wake up with calm, hydrated skin. It’s especially soothing after retinol nights.

💸 The math:

  • Cleanser: $14

  • Vitamin C: $15 – 25

  • SPF: $14 – 27

  • Retinol: $22 – 27

  • Night Mask: $27

≈ $92 – 120 total, depending which versions you pick.

Why This Capsule Works

Morning is all about defense and glow (Vitamin C + SPF), while evening focuses on repair and renewal (retinol + hydration). Together, they hit every core function — cleanse, treat, protect, restore — without the clutter or overspend.

If I Could Stretch the Budget a Little More…

Because I’m never not tempted to add “just one more thing.” If I had a few extra dollars, I’d slip in an essence and a toner — two steps that don’t seem essential until you see how much they elevate your routine.

  • Essence

An essence is like a hydration amplifier. It preps your skin so serums and moisturizers absorb better. Think of it as a bridge between cleansing and treatments: it restores balance, adds bounce, and gives that healthy, plumped-up glow.

    • Why I like this one: Dr. Pepti Peptide Volume Essence ($29.94) delivers instant radiance and a dewy finish without heaviness. It’s perfect for dull or dehydrated skin that needs a quick pick-me-up and layers beautifully under anything.

  • Exfoliating Toner

An exfoliating toner keeps skin fresh, smooth, and clear — like a gentle reset button for texture and tone. Regular exfoliation helps your serums and moisturizers work better, and keeps pores from getting congested without harsh scrubs.

    • Why I like this one: Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner ($19) is a balanced, gentle chemical exfoliant with AHA, BHA, and PHA to smooth, brighten, and refine. I use it in the morning before Vitamin C or on non-retinol nights to maintain glow without overdoing it. On nights I use it, I skip retinol and go straight to my mask or night cream.

The Takeaway

The best skincare routine is the one you’ll actually do. This capsule keeps things simple enough to stay consistent, but strong enough that you’ll see results — and that’s when you really start to feel like you’re making an impact. Start here, build slowly, and you’ll cover everything your skin truly needs.

Even though skincare is my thing, these are my tried-and-true staples — proof that even the skincare-obsessed don’t need to spend hundreds per product to have great skin.
